When the option for mentoring first was announced at Saturate, I was not too thrilled with the idea. I thought what in the world could I learn from it. Not to mention I had some severe insecurities about it too, like would the person I would be matched up with be a good match for me or not? Would I be a good match for them? Could they even lead me into a direction that would benefit me? All these questions and more filled my mind, but as each topic was taught during Saturate I realized maybe I could use another point of view on some of the topics. When the time came to make the decision on whether or not I would take part in it or not I prayed about it, and that’s when I felt God’s nudge to go ahead and give it a try. What could it hurt, and who knows I might actually get something out of it. So I went ahead and signed up for it.
The mentoring process was the best thing that I could have done for myself. I was able to dig a little deeper into some of the topics that I struggled with. My first meeting with Maria was in a neutral setting. We sat down for some coffee and just had some small talk at first. We wanted to get to know each other first. Instantly I knew Maria wouldn’t let me down the wrong path, we just clicked. She asked about my story, and she told me a little about hers too. Then we got down to business. Maria asked me to pick out four of the areas that I would like to dig into a little deeper and together we would rip them apart.
Each meeting we had it felt like I was just getting together with a friend and talking about things together. She was able to open my eyes in a different way to the things that I have been looking at with blinders on. I was able to set something up for myself that would help me to continue my growth. It was nice to come to someone that didn’t have a judgmental heart, but someone that was there to see me grow even if it was just a little. I am still growing with the information I have been provided, but it has given me a new step in the right direction. I would recommend anyone to use a mentor, they are there to help you, not hold you back. They are there to just give you that extra little step. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t easy to see everything laid out on the table, but in the long run it was well worth it.
